Road Maintenance Essentials
In a recent article published in the Kansas LTAP Newsletter (Fall 2009), there were some excellent tips on good road building and maintenance. A condensed version of those tips is highlighted here.
10 COMMANDMENTS OF A GOOD ROAD
- Get water away from the road
- Build on a firm foundation
- Use the best materials
- Compact all layers properly
- Design for traffic loads and volumes
- Design for maintenance
- Pave only when ready
- Build from the bottom up
- Protect your investment
- Keep good records
Regarding #6 "Design for maintenance," this means having . . .
- adequate ditches that can be cleaned regularly
- culverts that are marked for easy locating in the spring
- enough space for snow after it is plowed off the road
- proper cross slopes for safety, maintenance and to avoid snow drifts
- roadsides that are planted or treated to prevent erosion
- roadsides that can be mowed safely.
